What Time Should You Leave for Sky Harbor?

A real leave-by table for Sun City, Sun City West, Surprise, Peoria and Glendale.

Most "leave by" advice tells you when to get in the car. That's the wrong end of the problem. What you actually need is what time someone should be in your driveway — and from the Northwest Valley that answer changes by about 45 minutes depending on whether you're in Glendale or Surprise, and by another 30 depending on the hour.

The formula

Every number on this page comes out of one line of arithmetic:

Pickup time = flight time − 2 hours at the terminal − drive time − 10 minutes to load.

Two hours is the domestic standard at Sky Harbor. With TSA PreCheck you can reasonably use 90 minutes, which makes every pickup time below 30 minutes later. The 10 minutes at the start is real: bags come out, the door gets locked, someone goes back for the passports.

Drive times, and what the clock does to them

These are door-to-terminal, not house-to-parking-lot. The 4:00am column is the one worth trusting most: it's the only hour with essentially no variance.

The fare column is the whole van, one to six passengers — not per person. It's the same number at 3:15am as at 2:00pm; there's no night rate and no surge.

What actually slows you down

Before 6:00am is free. Grand Avenue and the 101 both move at speed, and the I-10 through downtown is empty. This is why early flights are easier than they sound, and why a 3am or 4am pickup costs the same as one at two in the afternoon.
6:15am is when it changes. The 51st Avenue stretch of the I-10 starts to stack up first, and a run that took 38 minutes at 4:00am takes closer to 55.
Grand Avenue versus the 101. Grand is the shorter line on a map and the faster road before about 6:00am. After that its signals and the BNSF crossings cost more than the extra miles on the 101, so the route changes.
3:00 to 6:00pm is the worst window of the day — worse than the morning, because you're driving into downtown rather than out of it. Budget half an hour more than the 4:00am number.

March is different

Spring Training changes the arithmetic for about six weeks. Surprise Stadium, Peoria Sports Complex and Camelback Ranch all sit on the same corridor you'd use to get to the airport, and a day game empties out into the afternoon rush. Through February and March, add 15 minutes to any afternoon or evening pickup on this page.

The same weeks are when the early-morning slots fill up furthest ahead. From November through mid-April the 4:00–5:30am block is routinely booked three to four weeks out, and Sunday and Monday go first. The longest of these runs is Sun City West, at 32 miles, which is also where the whole-van fare beats per-person pricing by the widest margin.

Which terminal

Sky Harbor runs two passenger terminals, 3 and 4. Terminal 4 is much the larger of the two and handles most departures; your boarding pass or airline app will say which one you need. It matters here for one reason: they're a few minutes apart on the airport loop, and the drop-off curbs are separate. Tell whoever is driving you which terminal when you book, not when you're pulling in.

When you should just drive yourself

Honestly: if you're travelling alone, on a midday flight, from Glendale or Peoria, and you'll be back inside three or four days, park at the airport. The economy lots are cheap enough over a short trip that a round-trip fare is hard to justify, and midday traffic is forgiving.

Where this stops being true is early departures, longer trips, and groups. A 3:15am pickup is not a favour you want to ask anyone, two weeks of parking costs more than both legs of a fare, and once there are four or more of you the whole-van rate is cheaper than per-person shuttle pricing on the same route. That's the case where booking a ride is simply the better deal, not just the more comfortable one.
